I’m James Trotter, a fractional CFO based in Hermanus. I work with founders, business owners, and senior management teams that have outgrown their accountants but aren’t ready for a full-time CFO. My focus is on bringing clarity, structure, and forward-looking financial leadership to businesses navigating growth, funding, or potential sale.
I partner with clients in both South Africa and the United Kingdom, particularly owner-managed and founder-led businesses that are scaling and need greater financial insight, planning, and control. My experience spans both developing-market and UK SME environments, giving me a practical understanding of the financial challenges and value drivers that matter most as businesses grow in different contexts.

| EXPERIENCE
Delivering Measurable Business Value
With over 15 years of financial leadership experience, I’ve held senior roles including Financial Director and CFO across international businesses in sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, logistics, renewable energy, sustainability, and technology.
I’m a Chartered Accountant (CA(SA)) with deep experience in financial management, reporting, and strategy: from strengthening core finance functions to supporting capital raises, restructurings, and due diligence. My work has consistently focused on improving financial discipline, decision-making, and investment readiness as businesses scale.
As Finance Director and EXCO member at Afrikelp (RMB and Nedbank Private Equity–owned), I led the finance function and ESG reporting framework while overseeing multiple capital structuring initiatives, including senior debt raises, tax restructurings, and management buy-ins. This role provided firsthand exposure to the financial standards and value drivers expected by investors and boards.
I’ve developed detailed financial and valuation models for businesses participating in international accelerator and funding programmes, helping translate complex strategies into practical, investor-ready financial frameworks.
Alongside this, I’ve worked closely with owner-managed and growing SME businesses (including in the UK) helping founders professionalise finance, improve cash flow visibility, and prepare for growth, investment, or eventual exit. This combination of hands-on SME support and institutional experience allows me to bring a practical, value-focused perspective to each engagement.
